We may know the identity of at least one of the NFL players who voted Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen as the most overrated quarterback in the league in a preseason poll.
Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott recently made his feelings known on Allen and it’s clear that he’s not a fan of Allen’s game. In an appearance on Marlon Humphrey’s Punch Line Podcast, Elliott shared his thoughts on the league’s MVP race. According to Elliot, it’s a two-man race between Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“Going for that third MVP, I mean behind Pat Mahomes, has to be him [Lamar Jackson],” Elliott said. Technically, I mean, nobody else is really doing it like him really.”
After giving his opinion on Jackson and Mahomes, Elliott made sure to take a shot at Allen stating that the quarterback doesn’t belong in the MVP race due to being a “turnover magnet.”
“You can say Josh Allen here and there, but he’s a turnover magnet,” Elliott added. “I’m going to keep it a bean at all times.”
Allen has had issues with turnovers in the past, but he has done a much better job of protecting the football in 2024. Through 11 weeks, Allen is currently 20th among all quarterbacks in turnovers (7). Mahomes, a quarterback that Elliot named as a legitimate MVP candidate is fifth with 11 turnovers this season.
Jackson was a questionable MVP winner last season as he seemed to win the award moreso due to the Ravens claiming the AFC’s No. 1 seed, but is certainly worthy of consideration again this year.
Elliott is entitled to his opinion, but Allen is as legitimate of a MVP candidate as there is in the league. The Bills quarterback has helped Buffalo get out to a 9-2 start this season. He has thrown for 2.543 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his passes. Allen has also rushed for 316 yards and five touchdowns over this span of time. Making his overall stat line even more impressive is that there have been a few games where Allen has exited early or thrown a limited number of passes due to Buffalo having commanding leads in games. Allen’s case was made even stronger recently by handing Mahomes’ Chiefs their first regular season loss in Week 11.
Elliott may not consider Allen a legitimate MVP candidate, but the voters who watch the games likely disagree with the journeyman safety.
